If you want healthy, younger-looking skin (who doesn’t?), it all starts with the skincare products you use. And when it comes to skincare products, we all have our go-to brands that we can’t seem to live without.

Neutrogena, Cetaphil, Olay, La Roche-Posay, whatever’s on sale at your Royal Oak department store…

All these brands promise the same things. They make outrageous claims that seem too good to be true, and while they might ring true for some, they often fall short of expectations – if they do anything at all.

Don’t worry – that’s what medical-grade skincare is for

Medical-grade skincare products, also known as cosmeceuticals, are formulated with high-quality active ingredients in higher concentrations than those typically found in over-the-counter skincare products.

They’re held to a much higher standard than their OTC counterparts and undergo rigorous clinical testing to prove their efficacy and safety – which is why they’re often preferred by healthcare professionals.

Different Types of Medical-Grade Skincare Products

Medical-grade skincare encompasses a wide range of different skincare products designed to restore, revitalize, repair, correct, protect, and maintain healthy, younger-looking skin in a variety of unique ways.

The three skincare products everyone should use daily include:

  • Cleansers are designed to remove dirt, oil, and makeup while addressing specific skin concerns, such as acne, dryness, or sensitivity.
  • Toners help to balance the skin's pH levels, hydrate, and prep the skin to absorb other products (like moisturizers) more effectively.
  • Moisturizers aim to provide deeper hydration and repair skin barrier function with high levels of ceramides, peptides, and antioxidants.

Skincare experts also recommend using exfoliating products several times per week, and serums as needed. Other products commonly used include Retinoids, eye creams, sunscreen, masks, and peels.

Neocutis: PSP, Growth Factors, and Peptides

Neocutis is a popular brand of medical-grade skincare products that was founded in 2003 from research focused on wound healing and burn treatments at the University Hospital of Lausanne in Switzerland.

The brand is known for developing something called Processed Skin Cell Proteins (PSP), which is a proprietary blend of peptides, proteins, and other key ingredients that help to promote skin recovery.

Neocutis prides themselves on two things – growth factors and peptides:

  • Growth Factors – naturally occurring proteins capable of stimulating cell growth, proliferation, healing, and cellular differentiation.
  • Proprietary Peptides – short chains of amino acids that promote collagen production and mimic the function of natural growth factors.

The Neocutis product line includes topicals designed to treat dark circles, dryness, dullness, fine lines, wrinkles, oiliness, oxidative stress, redness, sagginess, skin discoloration, and other signs of aging skin.

Epionce: The Brainchild of Dr. Carl Thornfeldt

In 1989, Dr. Carl Thornfeldt organized several research teams in Northern California with one goal – to make groundbreaking discoveries and perform research on skin function and botanical activity in the skin.

After 13 years of trial and error, Dr. Carl turned his research into a company (Episciences, Inc.) and a subsequent product line (Epionce). Now more than 20 years later, the product line is only getting better.

Epionce prides itself on four primary ingredients:

  • Antioxidants protect the skin by neutralizing free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells, including skin cells.
  • Cholesterol is a lipid found in the skin’s outer layer. It helps maintain the skin's barrier function and structural integrity.
  • Ceramides are another lipid that helps form a protective layer that limits moisture loss and protects against environmental damage.
  • Free fatty acids are components of the skin’s natural oils (sebum). They help maintain the skin's barrier function and flexibility.

The Epionce product line includes cleansers, toners, moisturizers, serums, and treatments designed to address specific skin concerns like aging, acne, hyperpigmentation, sensitive skin, and so much more.

Neocutis vs. Epionce: Which Product Line is Right for You?

Neocutis and Epionce are two of the most respected medical-grade skincare brands available on the market today, but what happens when these two skincare heavyweights are pinned against one another?

As much as we’d like to choose just one, we can’t.

Both product lines have strengths, but we would need to better understand your skin type and personal goals before we choose one over the other – what works for one person might not work for the next.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what we learned above:

  • Neocutis uses its proprietary ingredient called PSP® (Processed Skin Cell Proteins), which is a blend of growth factors, cytokines, and interleukins.
  • Epionce takes a barrier-first approach to skincare that utilizes barrier-repairing lipids, such as ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids.
